What do little kids hear at night?

I couldn't sleep last night and was lying in bed listening to the sounds of distant traffic. Reminded me of my early childhood, back in the 1930s, when I used to think that passing trucks were bogeymen. Do you have any night memories from your early childhood? What about things that disturbed your own children?

    all i seem to remember
is that my imagination played a mighty part
...never had kids so that part is unknown to me.

I always had an imagination. Back in the 50's, I was a little kid who lived on a farm. I was afraid of thunderstorms and hide under my bed covers and imagined I was a baby raccoon snuggling deep into it's underground nest.

I never could figure out why the thought of your parents having sex bothers people.  My Ma did not pop six kids out without a little help from the old man.

  • It's the mental image of it, not so much the thought of it. I was never uncomfortable talking about it with my parents.

My folks liked a bit of afternoon delight now and again.  I can recall them sending us outside to play and going in to ask them something...walked right in on 'em.

  • Dear Didge,

Well for me, the days were the difficult times of childhood...the world just too rough and hard and cold for me.

But the nights were always just fine; I still remember my pretty bedroom, from the time I was a toddler...wallpaper with pink roses, Priscilla curtains of organza, and a double wedding ring quilt handmade for me by my grandmother....window facing south, I could watch the moon all night!
And my parents were just a call away...no nightmare could get through!

As for my children, as you know the best I could come up with was my wonderful little god daughter. She was troubled, recovering from early years with a toxic mom. What we would do is read wonderful stories together before bed, and when she had nightmares - which happened less and less - we would just talk about them, maybe draw them, and sometimes even stay home from school and just do fun things together, great walks in the woods, by the river and such...she breaking trail and helping me along...one of my great success stories in life, she is 26 now and just doing fine. My brother-in-law was taught piano by this local lady (now deceased) who always claimed that she created the music for 'In the Ghetto', and had sent it into a 'music contest'. She didn't win anything but 'her' song was 'stolen' for Elvis to use.

  • You're very thoughtful, WW. My question didn't even consider the kids who have it tough, or lonelyu. Thanks.
